Rod Laver Arena's seating splits into a lower level (rows A-U) and an upper level (rows AA-PP), wrapped around the court in numbered sections. Sections 8-12 sit directly behind the baselines at the north and south ends; sections 4-7 and 13-16 run along the east and west sidelines. None of this matters much for sightlines, since the bowl is steep enough that even upper-level seats see the whole court cleanly. It matters enormously for two other things: sun and price.
For a day session in January, shade is the single biggest variable most people underrate until they're sitting in it. The sun sits high over the northeast stands around midday, then swings west and sets behind the southwest corner through the afternoon. Sections 2-5 and 25-30 catch the worst of the late-afternoon sun; the east sideline stays sunny longest, while the west sideline and the baseline sections are comfortably shaded by around 4:30pm. Sections 8-12, directly behind the baseline, are the most consistently shaded spot in the bowl and also happen to give the truest read on ball depth and pace — which is exactly why they're some of the hardest seats to get.
Price tiers run independent of the sun map. Lower-bowl sideline seats (rows A-U) sit in Category 1 pricing, the premium tier closest to the court. Upper-level seats (rows AA-PP) fall into Category 2 and 3, running noticeably cheaper across every round while keeping a clean sightline from top to bottom — a legitimate budget option rather than a compromise, especially useful if your plan for the day includes leaving mid-match to catch an outside court.
Evening sessions change the calculation. Once the sun drops, the shade question mostly disappears, though side-on seats on the east and west can still catch low evening sun until around 8:45pm depending on the time of year and how far into a match you are. Night session tickets at Rod Laver run at a premium over day tickets regardless of section — Margaret Court Arena also runs night sessions, but Rod Laver's is priced and scheduled around the tournament's single biggest match of the night — so at least you're not choosing a section based on where the sun will be in three hours.
Night sessions shift the whole shade calculation in a different way worth understanding on its own terms: once the sun has genuinely set, seat selection becomes almost entirely about price tier and proximity rather than sun exposure, which is part of why night tickets at Rod Laver command a real premium over day tickets in the same section. You're not just paying for the bigger scheduled match, you're paying for a seat where the only variable left to worry about is how close you are to the court, not which direction you're facing relative to the sky.
