Where to Stay in Perth for the First Test

Most "where to stay" guides for a stadium city pretend the choice is close-vs-far. Perth's real choice is resort-vs-city, because Perth Stadium isn't downtown — it's across the river in Burswood, next to Crown's casino and hotel complex, with the actual CBD a deliberate train ride away. That's unusual among the four Test venues on this tour, and it's worth knowing before you book, not after. Crown Towers suits someone who wants the tournament to be the whole trip: walk to the ground, swim between sessions, eat at Crown's restaurants, repeat. The CBD suits someone who wants Perth itself — Kings Park, the Elizabeth Quay waterfront, Northbridge's bars — with cricket as one part of a longer stay. Neither is the "correct" answer. What makes this worth spelling out is that the free three-hour Transperth window genuinely flattens the difference in travel effort, so the deciding factor should be what kind of week you actually want, not which hotel is fewer minutes from the gates.

Most stadium accommodation guides frame the choice as close versus far. Adelaide breaks that framing, because the Oval and the CBD are both close — the real question is whether you want the stadium to be your whole world for a few days or just the reason you're in town. The Oval Hotel is a genuinely rare thing: a proper hotel built into a working Test cricket ground, not a generic tower a few blocks away with a marketing line about proximity. Staying there means the ground's rhythm becomes your own — you can hear the crowd from certain rooms, and walking to your seat is a lobby exit, not a journey. That's worth paying for if the Test is the point of the trip. But North Adelaide is quiet outside match hours, all heritage parkland and residential streets, while the CBD across the river has the city's actual life in it. Neither choice is a compromise. They're just different trips wearing the same hotel booking.

Late December through late January is one of the most in-demand stretches on Melbourne's summer sporting calendar — the Australian Open draws well over a million visitors across its own fortnight, and the Boxing Day Test week that precedes it stacks Christmas travel, New Year's Eve, and 80,000-90,000 daily cricket fans into the same seven days. Booking months ahead isn't excessive caution here, it's the difference between a normal rate and paying double. Once you've accepted that, the East Melbourne-versus-CBD choice becomes a genuine lifestyle question rather than a budget one: East Melbourne means the MCG/Melbourne Park precinct is essentially your front yard, good when Melbourne's unpredictable summer weather makes a short walk back to your room valuable. The CBD means Collins Street's restaurants and the wider city are close, at the cost of a slightly longer trip on match days. Both are good decisions. Only one saves you from watching your card get charged double in December. —Bounce Melbourne and Space Hotel both fill for this week 5-7 months out — earlier than the hotels above, since budget stock is thinner to begin with and gets booked by backpackers on a different, longer-lead-time travel calendar.

Sydney — Fourth Test

Where to Stay in Sydney for the Fourth Test

Walk to the SCG from Paddington, or take the light rail from the CBD — Sydney's real tradeoff

Every other Test venue on this tour puts the stadium roughly in or right next to its city. Sydney doesn't. The SCG sits in Moore Park, a genuinely separate precinct from the CBD, with Paddington's residential streets backing directly onto it — so the "stay close or stay central" choice here is real geography, not marketing. Mrs Banks earns its place because it's not just near the ground, it's a good hotel in its own right, a converted heritage bank with a 4.8 Google rating that would hold up anywhere in the city. QT Sydney earns its place because the light rail genuinely closes the distance — you're not choosing between convenience and everything else Sydney offers, you're choosing how many minutes of light rail you're willing to spend for it. January in Sydney is also just a different city than the other three legs of this tour: harbour, beaches, humidity, storms that roll in fast. Where you stay changes how much of that you actually get to use.

Paddington / Sydney CBD

—The SCG has no train station of its own — Moore Park light rail stop (L2/L3) is the direct route in from both the CBD and Surry Hills, and it's a short walk from the platform to the gates, not a shuttle or transfer.
