Shanghai itself has real sightseeing depth worth a spare day between sessions, and two genuine trips out of the city sit within a fast train ride — Hangzhou's West Lake and Suzhou's classical gardens are both feasible in a single day without rushing.

In the city

Most riverside promenades are just a nice walk. The Bund is a deliberate architectural argument, laid out along 1.5km of waterfront: on one side, an entire century-old foreign concession preserved as a single unbroken streetscape; on the other, the skyline that answered it. Standing between the two at dusk, watching one era's lights come on to face another's, is a genuinely different experience from seeing either side in isolation — the Bund's real value is the comparison, not just the view.

Most of what a first-time visitor calls "Yu Garden" is actually the free bazaar around it — genuinely worth the visit on its own, but a different experience entirely from the ticketed Ming garden inside the walls. Knowing the two are separate, and that one rewards a quiet morning while the other rewards a crowded evening, is the difference between visiting Yu Garden well and visiting it by accident on the way to dinner.

—The garden and the bazaar keep different hours — the garden closes by 5-5:30pm, the bazaar stays lively until around 10pm, so you can genuinely do both in one day if you time the garden first.

French Concession & Tianzifang — An Afternoon on Foot

The French Concession is one of the only places in Shanghai where two very different histories are stacked on the same streets and both are still visible: a colonial-era residential district built for one class of resident, later inherited by artists who had nothing to do with its original purpose. Tianzifang didn't get planned into an arts district — it became one, inside buildings that were never meant to be galleries, which is exactly why it still feels like a real neighbourhood rather than a curated attraction.

—Walk the wider Concession boulevards first, then enter Tianzifang from a side lane rather than the main tourist entrance — the alleys close to the busiest entry point get crowded fastest.
—Weekday afternoons are noticeably calmer than weekends in Tianzifang's narrow lanes, where crowd density matters more than it would on the open Concession streets.

Lujiazui Skyline — Three Towers, One Bottle Opener

Three supertall towers, three design eras, one deliberate skyline

Most cities grow their skyline gradually, tower by tower, decade by decade. Lujiazui was planned as a cluster from the start, and the fact that its three defining buildings — 1999, 2008, and 2015 — sit directly beside each other means you're looking at three distinct design generations standing shoulder to shoulder, not scattered across a city. The SWFC's own design history, a genuine political dispute settled by changing a hole's shape, is a reminder that even a skyline this deliberate still carries real, specific human argument behind its final form.

Day Trip: Hangzhou and West Lake (Xi Lake)
